BEING PRESENT IN YOUR LIFE
Unpacking our lives
Negative thoughts have had a place in our evolutionary past. Being little monkeys in the trees looking constantly for potential dangers was a necessary action of the mind. It was the process of surviving long enough to propagate the succeeding generations of smart monkeys. The mind has thousands of thought per day and most are the same thoughts you had the day before, even weeks, month or even years before. Also, our minds have a lens that focuses on irritations, grudges and judgments. This meditation helps to release the tension that repetitive thoughts create.
Being present: Ask yourself, “Where am I?” The answer is always, “here”. Open Eyes and using your peripheral vision to see the height, width and depth of the space where you are. When you use your peripheral vision you become present and grounded. Now, close the eyes slowly and start listening to the sounds in the room. Feel your breath, is it shallow or deep and smooth? Are you breathing from your belly or your chest? Breathe as deeply as possible and then exhale all the way out. Now, move slowly into your body and become aware of where you are holding tension. Is it in your neck, shoulders, jaw? Release the tension by breathing into and exhaling out of the area of tension.
Move into the bones, organs and blood stream and feel the energy moving through you. Feel the energy you cultivated with the Qigong exercises we just did.
Move now to your heart, is there stress? Breathe into the heart and release any worries, tension, and fear of the future or regret of the past.
Now, see a person in your mind’s eye who you have compared and contrasted yourself in the past. Feel how that was for you. Do you feel less than to that person? Do you feel like “one upping”?
Now, see them from a higher perspective. Are you judging your insides with their outsides? Visualize both of you as babies. See that person as a pure being as well as yourself as a pure being. See you both at beginning on the journey before the world weighed you down with expectations. Send that person love and joy, as you do, send that to yourself also.
Forgiveness manifests twofold with those who are being forgiven and those who are forgiving. God blesses both. As Shakespeare said in the play Merchant of Venice, “The quality of mercy is not strain’d,It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath: it is twice blest; It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:” See yourself forgiving that person and yourself with tenderness and mercy. Take a few deep breath and send this image out in the universe to manifest peace, calm and forgiveness to you and others.
This unpacking from the tension and repetitive thoughts allows us to have room for new thoughts. Thoughts that support us and brings us peace and joy. Set the intention to accept the outcome of this meditation. Repeat every day for a week and see what happens.
