Qigong Instruction

We offer private one-on-one sessions or group classes.

A qigong session typically offers a combination of slow movements, deep breathing exercises, and meditation, often incorporating relaxation techniques, guided imagery, and mindfulness. The goal is to promote the flow of "qi" or life force, leading to benefits like improved balance, reduced stress, and enhanced physical and mental well-being. A session may be practiced while standing or sitting and often includes spinal warm-ups, gentle stretches, and a closing meditation.

What a qigong session includes:

  • Mindful movement: Slow, flowing, and gentle movements that are often repetitive and coordinated with breath.
  • Breathing exercises: Focused on deep, diaphragmatic breathing to oxygenate the blood and cultivate internal energy.
  • Meditation: Practices that can include both moving and still meditation to enhance awareness, concentration, and mental clarity.
  • Relaxation and guided imagery: Techniques to promote relaxation and use focused intention to guide the flow of energy.
  • Specific exercises: These can vary but may include shaking, reaching, twisting, tapping, and rolling movements designed to open energy pathways.

Animal Care Psychology

A combination of principles of psychology with animal welfare to promote ethical treatment and enhance the lives of animals in various settings.

  • Assessment and understanding:
    • Evaluate animals' mental states by recognizing positive emotions (joy, contentment) and negative ones (fear, anxiety, boredom).
    • Assess individual needs, preferences, and social behaviors to ensure a better fit for their environment.
    • Understand emotional contagion, where animals may mirror human emotional states, and its impact on their well-being.
  • Behavioral interventions:
    • Design and implement interventions based on psychological principles to promote positive behaviors.
    • Use positive reinforcement training to help animals cooperate with procedures, reducing stress and fear.
    • Address negative states by providing environmental enrichment and opportunities for social interaction.
  • Ethical and welfare standards:
    • Apply principles like the "five freedoms" (freedom from hunger, thirst, discomfort, pain, fear, and the ability to express normal behaviors) and the "five domains" (nutrition, environment, health, behavior, and mental state).
    • Ensure ethical treatment by minimizing pain, stress, and suffering through techniques like appropriate anesthesia and pain management.
    • Promote a sense of control over their environment and ability to express preferences.

12-Step Movement

The principles of the 12-Step recovery program (accountability, humility, and progress over perfection) can be applied metaphorically to frame a fitness journey as a long-term process with small, consistent changes.

  • Acknowledge limitations: Recognize that you cannot achieve perfect results overnight and accept that some days will be harder than others.
  • Believe in a higher power: Trust that a larger purpose or a "higher power" (like your own resilience and commitment) can help you reach your goals.
  • Commit to a plan: Decide to turn your will and life over to a plan of action, such as a fitness program, with consistent effort and dedication.
  • Take a self-inventory: Conduct a fearless and honest self-assessment of your current fitness level and any behaviors that may be hindering progress.
  • Admit your wrongs: Honestly admit your mistakes and acknowledge when you have fallen short of your goals.
  • Be ready for change: Be entirely ready to make changes to your habits and mindset to improve your health.
  • Ask for help: Humbly ask for help from a trainer, coach, or fitness community to remove your shortcomings.
  • Make amends: Take responsibility for past unhealthy habits and make "amends" by committing to a healthier lifestyle.
  • Practice continuous improvement: Continue to take personal inventory and promptly admit when you are wrong, making adjustments as you go.
